Collection consists of advertisements, correspondence, ledgers, minutes, receipts, reports, and other material related to the Union Pacific, Denver and Gulf Railway Company. Created in 1889 as a consolidation of the Colorado Central, the Denver, Texas and Fort Worth, and the South Park and Pacific systems, as well as a number of smaller non-mail lines held by the Union Pacific system in both Colorado and southern Wyoming. By 1893, former Colorado governor John Evans introduced some resolutions at a stockholders' meeting calling for a reorganization of the railroad. After his resolutions were defeated, Evans asked the U.S. Circuit Court to appoint a receiver for the Union Pacific, Denver and Gulf. Following lengthy legal maneuverings, Frank Trumbull was appointed receiver in 1893. While in receivership, the line more closely aligned itself with the mining, coking and steel interests of Colorado, eventually achieving independence from the Union Pacific. In 1899 the company was succeeded by the Colorado and Southern Railway.
